
Cold Sore Home Treatments & Natural Remedies
Lemon
This has been used for years as a natural cold sore treatment. Simply hold a slice on you cold sore for as log as you can. replace with a fresh slice as often as possible.
Licorice
If you have cold sore in you mouth and you like licorice this may be worth a try. One ingredient in licorice: glycyrrhizic acid is know to inhibit the development of cold sores. Simply chew on it and cross your fingers.
Ice
You can't get more natural than water and using ice can be very effective at treating cold sores. Rub an ice cube directly on the cold sore for about 10 minutes and repeat every 2 hours for 2 to 3 days. Use a cloth to stop your fingers from melting it but the ice needs to be in direct contact with the cold sore.
Garlic
Raw garlic is an antibiotic and has the ability to kill many different types of bacteria and viruses one of which is the herpes virus. So if you wife/husband/partner etc. doesn't mind the smell try eating some raw. Of you could buy some odourless supplements.
Milk
Studies have show that an ingredient of milk - a fat called monocaprin - can kill the cold sore virus. Soak some cotton wool with milk and apply to the cold sore. Full fat milk will work better than skimmed.
Peppermint oil
If your cold sore is on you lip a good natural treatment is peppermint oil as it is an anti viral. Apply directly to the cold sore.
Plum juice
Plum juice is effective for some cold sore suffers and a good treatment to try of the sores are in you mouth.
Tea bag
You may look a bit silly7 pressing a tea bag to your face but for some it does work. The tea bag need to be warm and keep it pressed on the cold sore for about 20 minutes if possible. Repeat every few hours.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Another option for sore in you mouth is hydrogen peroxide. Mix 2 oz's with 5 teaspoons of salt and one of baking soda and you have a horrible tasting but very effective cold sore kill solution. You need to rinse you mouth with it for at least a minute once every 2 hours. Remember to spit it out once you have finished.
